An Unexpected Call

Last night I received a phone call from a friend whom I feel very close to, but also who is far away. She was calling to tell me about another friend and for me not to worry about the other friend. She knew I had had some qualms about the other person. She was so sweet to call, but I think she needed to talk to me as much as I needed to talk to her. I think that because I sensed she had been drinking. That didn't bother me so much as that it was hard to understand everything she said. Once she asked me to please not hang up and yet, I had never intended to. I actually wanted to talk about her, but she was quick to divert the conversation back to other subjects. We talked about art and how much she loved another artist's paintings (someone we both know) and then we talked about my art. She commissioned me to do some art that I love to do anyway. All I can really say is, I really think the world of this woman and would love to have been right there in the room with her to comfort her, but alas, I couldn't. I just hope our conversation was of some use to her as it was to me. Sometimes we women become very close and we're not even sure why. Perhaps it's kindness or the humor we show to each other. I can truthfully say, this woman is a good person and I would meet her anywhere she said if I could.

Why Vidalia

I have been encouraged by a friend to explain the title I've chosen for this blog. Vidalia is a type of onion, especially found in Georgia. Though I do like onions, this onion is very tasty. However, it is just happenstance that this name is being used, not because I like onions.

When I was in college, I had a wonderful roommate named Ginny Thomas. It was my senior year and I was dating different people. Sometimes when I would come in from a date, Ginny would ask me how it went. If I held anything back about my feelings, she would say, "Now, Buuuudeee, I can read your face, something else is going on." She was damned good at intuiting what was going on with me. This kind of insight on her part didn't just apply to my dating. She could tell when I was upset about other situations. We remained friends for years after I graduated.

Years went by and after I was married and had children, Ginny and I renewed our friendship by mail. I could do email by then, but she would write her letters out in long hand and have her husband fax them to me. She just didn't understand how to work with email. I reminded her how she used to be able to detect my feelings and that, it was as if I were an onion and she was "the peeler", peeling back layer after layer till she got to the bottom of my feelings. I jokingly told her my favorite onion was the Vidalia. Thus, I started writing to her and calling her "Peeler" and she called me, "Vi". I have always remembered that and when needing a name for this blog site, I chose a favorite word of mine from my history with Ginny.

Where is Ginny now? She lives with her PHD husband Peter Fleischer in Pass Christian, Miss.
